Primary School (Grades 1-6)

El Porvenir Primaria is a government certified primary school located in Heroés De Chapultec (San Telmo Community), a small rural farming community in Baja California, Mexico. El Porvenir Primaria began operating about four years ago when we had a vision to raise up community leaders who will impact the larger community. Starting with 60 students, our school has grown to be a successful school, serving 120 students in grades 1-6. All of our teachers are certified Mexican teachers with extensive teaching backgrounds and local to the community they serve.

Before our school was established, children in this community had the opportunity to attend a local primary school operating on minimal government support. However, many of the children in the community were not able to finish primary school and instead worked in the fields alongside their parents, while others stayed at home to take care of their youngers siblings. The cost of uniforms, lunch, books, and school supplies are all seen as unnecessary expenses in comparison to their need for food, water, and other basic necessities.

Primary school is typically the highest level of education achieved amongst our students, while a majority of their parents are illiterate. Even after students are able to finish primary school, transportation costs, financial difficulties, and household responsibilities make it impossible for students to attend their local secondary school, which is located miles away from their community.

At El Porvenir Primaria, uniforms, lunch, and school supplies are provided at low cost to ensure a level of meaning of value and investment. We work to meet the spiritual, physical, and emotional needs of all our families so that they will not face any barriers to pursuing education. Neighboring El Porvenir Primaria is a daycare called, Jardín de Esperanza. We planted this daycare with the hope that all of our students will be able to have their siblings taken care of while they are attending our primary school. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord,

“plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

– Jeremiah 29:11

The expected outcomes in this community are that students will barely finish primary school, work in the fields from a young age, be exposed to drugs, alcohol, and prostitution, and work to live instead of living a life that God intended. El Porvenir Primaria changes these expected outcome one student at a time. Our school offers quality education that turns hopelessness into expectation – we believe that our students are symbol of the transformation that is already sweeping through the entire community today.

We have already seen a profound transformation in the families of our students as they have witnessed a change in their own children. Families are actively participating in school activities and responding to the vision of the school. El Porvenir Primaria has become a symbol of pride in the community and hope that the future generation of children will be able to rise above their seemingly hopeless circumstances into a future that is endless with opportunities for their dreams to turn into realities.

Every summer, a team of 40 college and young adults gather together to carry out an English teaching program, which also focuses in visual arts, dance, and service learning to offer students opportunities to continue their education throughout the summer.
